If you volunteer to participate in one of our studies, you will be invited to the lab for one or two appointments that each last one to one and a half hours.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the experimenter in our friendly waiting area, where your child can play with some nice toys and get familiar with the experimenter. Here you will receive detailed information about the procedure of the study, and you will be asked to sign the consent form and fill in a background questionnaire.
Then you will all go to the lab, where the study itself takes place. The lab is furnished only with a table and two chairs to make it easier for your child to pay attention to the study. Sitting on your lap at the table, your child will observe the experimenter “play” with a series of interesting objects, and also have the opportunity to play with the objects him-/herself. The session in the lab will be videotaped, and the video will later be coded into numerical data. Depending on which condition your child is assigned to, you will have one or two sessions in the lab. The break between the two sessions will be spent in the waiting area, where you will be asked to fill in a questionnaire, while your child can play freely. You will also have time to give your child a snack or change diapers if necessary.
Before you leave, you will have the opportunity to ask questions if there is anything else you would like to know about the study. As a thank you, you will receive a gift card, and your child will receive a small toy and a certificate of participation.
