The following aims of the NOWAC project can be described as four main objectives. However, the specific hypothesis underlying the different aims and grants will be dealt with under the research plan.

• I. Further epidemiological analysis of risk factors for cancer based on information in the NOWAC database (questionnaire and blood samples).
• II. Study the gene expression of mRNA in peripheral blood cells in relation to development and diagnosis of cancer in the national postgenome cohort.
• III. Studies of gene-environment interactions by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as part of participation in the European Prospective Investigation into Nutrition and Cancer (EPIC).
• IV. Collection of breast tumor tissue samples from participants in the NOWAC postgenome cohort with buffered mRNA from tumor and blood.
