Effect of snow depth on microbial soil communities
Microbial soil communities in polar regions are adapted to climatic extremes but their response to changes in winter snow depth are not well known. Since Arctic systems are nutrient limited, any changes to soil carbon and nitrogen cycling could have profound consequences for plant growth and quality. This project will investigate the role of soil microbial communities in nutrient cycling and how their function may change under differing snow depths.
This project will be conducted in collaboration with UNIS (The University Centre in Svalbard).
