Impacts of snow depth and timing of snowmelt on plant phenology, growth, quality and growing season length
One of the main predictions of climatic warming in polar regions is that warmer temperatures will lead to longer growing seasons. This project will make detailed phenological observations on plants at the experimental snow fence site in Adventdalen. Target plant species will include key graminoids, herbs and shrubs. The timing of snowmelt will be manipulated through the use of snow fences, manual removal and the use of open topped chambers.
The data obtained will be used within the International Tundra Experiment (ITEX) to compare responses across Arctic and Alpine sites.
