Language of the landscape: Searching for natural arenas for Sami language teaching
This is an attempt to explain experiences obtained during Sami language courses given at the beginning level. The students seem to be more motivated to communicate in Sami language after common activities connected to traditional Sami knowledge. Outdoor education and participating in cultural practices in the surrounding environment give students many opportunities to use different senses as well as socioaffected strategies in their learning. Establishing areas for language learning activities in the local community, deliver a winwin situation for all participants: students, teachers and traditional knowledge carriers. In this way all participants become involved in maintaining sustainable Sami societies.
