The Knowledgeing Workshop in Sápmi – Experiential knowledge as a basis for applying cultural competence in practice

Cultural competence is a dialogue between experience and the knowledge gained from the connection to meaningful surroundings, i.e., context. This has been a subject of interest in social work in Saami regions. In this article, we argue for an extensive interpretation of The Knowledgeing Workshop in Sápmi.

Experiential learning represents a basis for applying cultural competence in practice. Applied to social work, this perspective is situated in a contextual interpretation of the concept of culture. The discussion is founded in a process where Saami social workers participated in an educational project.

The project, called “Stories Enhancing Skills”, is a well-structured process that has as its basis stories and experiences. It aims to develop the skills needed to take reasonable decisions in difficult and complex situations. In this study we explore the process and investigate whether this working model is suitable for developing skills in cultural competence.

This article describes how the “Stories Enhancing Skills” project helped social workers to integrate culture in their practical social work.
