\ndialects -n<\/em> is used in bisyllabic stems and -s<\/em> in trisyllabic stems. In the
\ndialect of G\u00e1ivuotna it is typical for the older generations that the same
\ninformants use both n<\/em> and s<\/em>, but n<\/em> is now losing ground, especially in the
\nyounger generations. The written standard supports the choice of s<\/em>-suffix
\nin the spoken language, but it looks like there is another trigger too.
\nG\u00e1ivuotna is on the coast. The neighbouring inland dialects are the G\u00e1rasavvon
\ndialect with sg.loc. -n<\/em>, and the Guovdageaidnu dialect with sg.loc.
\n-s<\/em> in bisyllabic stems. In the latter dialect there is assimilation ii>i in
\nunstressed syllables. This assimilation together with the -n<\/em> suffix causes
\nin the G\u00e1ivuotna dialect a homonymic clash between locative singular and
\nplural in nouns with i-stem. The speakers evidently prefer using s<\/em>-suffix
\nin nouns with i-stem that are not place names. This could have been the
