Denominal forms with –<\/em>naga in North Saami: Between grammar and lexicon<\/em><\/h3>\n

This article discusses the morphology, syntax and semantics of the previously under-described suffix –naga<\/em> in present-day written North Saami. More precisely, the study presents a detailed description of denominal forms with –naga<\/em> such as varranaga<\/em> \u2018stained with blood\u2019, m\u00e1lanaga<\/em> \u2018stained with paint\u2019 and beto\u014bganaga<\/em> \u2018stained with concrete\u2019. Forms with –naga<\/em> have traditionally been labeled adverbs in dictionaries but have largely been ignored in grammatical descriptions of North Saami. Investigation into the morphosyntactic and semantic functions of the form in actual language use suggests, however, that –naga<\/em> is best analyzed as a productive derivational suffix that is used to turn mass nouns denoting substances into \u201ccontaminative adjectives\u201d that describe mostly unwanted states of objects covered in the substance in question. Although forms with –naga<\/em> lack the comparative and superlative forms common to ordinary adjectives in North Saami, they exhibit typical adjectival properties in that they occur in predicative and adnominal modifying functions, e.g., Giehta lea varranaga<\/em>\/m\u00e1lanaga<\/em>\/beto\u014bganaga<\/em> [hand be.3SG blood\/paint\/concrete.naga<\/em>] \u2018the hand is stained with blood\/paint\/concrete\u2019 and varranaga<\/em>\/m\u00e1lanaga<\/em>\/beto\u014bganaga<\/em> giehta<\/em> \u2018a hand stained with blood\/paint\/concrete\u2019. In addition to the most prototypical contaminative meaning of –naga<\/em>, it is also occasionally used in more abstract and creative functions, such as varranaga tragediija<\/em> \u2018bloody tragedy\u2019 or mihcam\u00e1rnaga<\/em> [Midsummer.naga] \u2018with remnants of (having celebrated) Midsummer\u2019.<\/p>\n
