In his short life he worked as a folklore collector, an essayist, an author, and a teacher.<\/p>\n<p>The main objective of this study is to investigate the reasons why Jalvi used S\u00e1mi as a literary language. In addition, I also investigate why he changed his name. In 1911 Jalvi attended the Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 Teachers Seminary, where he graduated in 1915. During the first year at the seminary, he began to use the name Pekka Pohjans\u00e4de instead of Helander, the surname of his birth. Later, in an article he wrote in the spring of 1914, he started publicly using the name Pedar Jalvi, which refers to his birthplace.<\/p>\n<p>Name changes were common at the time among the Fennomans, the Finnish nationalists in the Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 Teachers Seminary, but they can also be understood as a search for personal and social identity. Regarding the latter, I refer to Jenkins\u2019 (2008 (2004)) and Wimmer\u2019s (2008a; 2008b) theories of identity. Pedar Jalvi\u2019s life and writings have been the subject of many articles since the 1920s.
