The knowledge\u00a0of the borderlines between tax lands was handed down from generation to\u00a0generation. Bear hunting rights on the tax lands were strictly controlled and\u00a0those who broke the landowners rights were tried by the district court. The\u00a0importance\u00a0of the bear was due to the fact that the bear was a holy animal\u00a0and was the guardian of future game.<\/p>\n<p>In their bear ceremonies the Sami honoured the dead bear, which was\u00a0usually killed in the spring when it rose from its winter lair and the spring\u00a0thaw had set in, from which the Finnish words <em>suvi<\/em> and <em>suoja<\/em> originate.\u00a0These words turned into Sami <em>noa<\/em> words, meaning the bear itself, the\u00a0hunter or his wife etc.<\/p>\n<p>Detecting the background of these words makes it possible to interpret such\u00a0Sami terms as <em>suije<\/em>, <em>sueje<\/em> and <em>s\u00f6iwe<\/em> used in connection with ceremonies\u00a0referred to in old documents. Therefore <em>sueie<\/em>, or \u2019a spirit of prophecy\u2019 in\u00a0a text from the 17th Century seems to have its origin in the belief in the\u00a0guardian\u00a0spirit of the bear.
