Algebra studies  the fundamental structures in mathematics, for example, polynomials,  prime numbers, groups, fields. These mathematical structures are ubiquitous objects that occur in many parts of mathematics, but can also be used to understand strategical games (Chess, Tic-Tac-Toe,..), puzzles (Rubik’s cube) or origami.  This is one reason why techniques and results of Algebra can be used also for applications outside mathematics. 

Our group teaches fundamental classes in Algebra and is active in research both on the abstract as well as on the applied side of algebra. Our main focus areas are in

  • Applied and Real Algebraic Geometry,
  • Coding theory,
  • Homological Algebra,
  • Number Theory, and
  • Polynomial Optimization.
