WP1: Biodiscovery

Work Package 1 – Genome-enabled marine biodiscovery of middle-space molecules

The main aim of WP1 is the discovery and isolation of new antimicrobial compounds produced by Arctic marine microorganisms. A selection of promising marine fungal strains are in the process of being genome sequenced for genome mining. This brilliant technique allows us to look into the genome for possible new antibiotics in that the fungi does not express. Several marine bacterial isolates have already been sequenced with the purpose to identify biosynthetic gene clusters for secondary metabolites. In addition, classical bioactivity-guided isolation and chemistry-guided isolation will be performed to identify novel bioactive compounds.
