Description :

The Bushveld layered complex of South Africa measures up to 100.000 km2 in subsurface outcrop, and the entire Bushveld event (mafic-ultramafic, felsic and alkaline phases) up to 1M km3. The complex hosts the largest ore deposits on Earth, with up to 80% of global PGE, Cr and V resources, as well as significant Cu, Ni, Au, Sn, F, P, andalusite, and dimension stone. Petrogenetic questions that remain debated since almost a century include the origin of the layering, the tectonic regime, the emplacement mechanisms, the unusual size, and the source of the unusually high metal endowment. This talk provides an overview of the geology of the complex and some of the key controversies.
