The research project covers the fields of ore geology, geochemistry and experimental petrology. The main goal of the project is to give a better insight into the origin and evolution of gabbro pegmatites and their role in formation of various types of ore deposits. The research will be focused to effects of the magmatic-hydrothermal transition, the melt viscosity and the cooling rate on the crystal size and on the partition of metals between mafic silicate melts, solid phases and magmatic fluids. The project represents a novel approach that combines the field and laboratory studies of natural-occurring pegmatites and associated ore deposits and experimental petrology studies.
The project includes three fieldwork campaigns in Northern Norway and laboratory work in Norway and abroad. The appointed candidate will work on the determination of forming conditions of three selected gabbro pegmatites using a wide spectrum of analytical methods (phase and textural analyses (XRD, SEM/EBSD), lithogeochemistry and mineral chemistry (XRF, SEM/EDS+WDS, LA-ICP-MS), fluid and melt inclusions studies (microthermometry, Raman spectroscopy, LA-ICP-MS analyses of individual inclusions). Piston-cylinder experiments will be used for testing of established pegmatite-forming processes in the P-T-X space. In addition, they will provide information on the chemical element partition between silicate melts and magmatic fluid and the effect of cooling rate on the crystal size and the chemical element partitioning between silicate melts and solid phases.
