The purpose of the facility is to support basic and applied research in the fields of geosciences, environmental sciences, and methane emissions in the present and the past.

Support and collaboration

The Stable Isotope Laboratory (SIL) is located at the Department of Geology at Campus Tromsø, UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The purpose of the facility is to support basic and applied research in the fields of geosciences, environmental sciences, and methane emissions in the present and the past. We promote collaborations among the faculties at the Arctic University of Norway and with other research institutes as well as with industry. In addition, we perform external service.

Measurement tools

The laboratory has a Thermo-Fisher MAT253 IRMS with a Gasbench II for the determination of δ13C and δ18O in carbonates and δ13C of DIC in waters, and a Flash HT Plus Elemental Analyser for measurements of the isotope ratios as well as the elemental compositions of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen and hydrogen. The samples can be solids or liquids, consisting of organic or inorganic material.The Mass Spectrometer is equipped for clumped isotopes measurements.

Preparation

The staff at SIL have access to sample preparation facilities, including a wet lab for sample washing and acid digestion, a clean-room for specific chemical cleaning, a variety of microscopes (9 Leica div MZ, Wilde Heerbrugg M 400, M 38, M 8 and double microscopes) and access to a Leica DMLP with photo acquisition possibilities.
