It is not a cruise in a warm and comfortable weather. Screenshot: npolar.no<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Does the sea ice cap on top of the Arctic Ocean stop methane from escaping into the atmosphere? That is one of the questions that the CAGE oceanographer Anna\u00a0Silyakova\u00a0hopes to\u00a0answer during a very cold experiment.\u00a0She will spend six weeks\u00a0on\u00a0board\u00a0<i>Research Vessel Lance<\/i>, which is\u00a0currently frozen in and\u00a0drifting with the Arctic\u00a0ice\u00a0pack,\u00a0as a part of the\u00a0\u00a0N-ICE2015 project led by the Norwegian Polar Institute.<\/p>\n<p><i>RV\u00a0<\/i><i>Lance<\/i>\u00a0froze\u00a0into the ice north of\u00a0Nordaustlandet\u00a0on Svalbard\u00a0in January this year, at 83.25\u00b0N 30\u00b0E. The aim is to let the ship\u00a0passively drift with the\u00a0sea\u00a0ice.\u00a0If everything goes as\u00a0anticipated,\u00a0the first year sea ice will drift from North of Svalbard Archipelago and Southwest to the\u00a0Fram\u00a0Strait, where one of CAGE primary research sites is located.<\/p>\n<p>The drift\u00a0will\u00a0take about six\u00a0months, and during that time several teams of scientists\u00a0are going to\u00a0study processes in the sea ice, ocean below and atmosphere above it.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Unprecedented\u00a0<\/b><b>observations<\/b><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2301\" style=\"width: 387px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/cage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/anna-silyakova.-rv-lance.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2301 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/cage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/anna-silyakova.-rv-lance.jpg\" alt=\"Anna Silyakova sends her greetings from RV Lance, frozen into the Arctic Ocean. photo: Dr. Anna Silyakova.\" width=\"387\" height=\"200\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 387px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 387\/200;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anna Silyakova sends her greetings from RV Lance, frozen into the Arctic Ocean. Photo: Dr. Anna Silyakova.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With recent temperatures\u00a0down to &#8211; 40\u00b0\u00a0C\u00a0around\u00a0<i>RV Lance<\/i>\u00a0it could prove\u00a0quite a\u00a0task.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Silyakova\u00a0however is looking forward to the challenge, which will give her the\u00a0opportunity to conduct some unprecedented\u00a0observations\u00a0on emissions of methane from\u00a0the\u00a0ice covered\u00a0Arctic Ocean. Most of them will be conducted\u00a0in the middle of the polar night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The primary objective is to learn how much dissolved methane\u00a0there\u00a0is underneath the ice and in the water column. The\u00a0common hypothesis\u00a0is that sea ice seals methane in the water. But no one has so far measured how much methane is accumulated, or if it indeed does accumulate, underneath the ice.&#8221;\u00a0saysDr.\u00a0Silyakova\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>She is also going to examine the ice cores to see if there is any methane in the sea ice itself, or if it is possible for the greenhouse gas to escape the icy confines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think of sea ice as a solid structure, but\u00a0that\u00a0is not\u00a0an\u00a0exact\u00a0description. There are pores and channels in it\u00a0created by brine\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0very\u00a0salty water that does not freeze.\u00a0Channels\u00a0and pores\u00a0in the\u00a0sea\u00a0ice\u00a0can potentially lead methane gas from the surface of the ocean to the atmosphere. It will be interesting to see\u00a0if there is methane released from\u00a0ocean to the atmosphere through the ice.&#8221; says\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Silyakova.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Newly developed sensors<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Dr.\u00a0Silyakova\u00a0will deploy sensors\u00a0developed\u00a0for CAGE\u00a0by\u00a0Contros\u00a0in Kiel. There is a fair share of excitement involved with this: The conditions are\u00a0inhospitable, and precious equipment may get lost.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sensor will stay in the water column for four weeks\u00a0during the freeze in. Needless to say:\u00a0I don\u00b4t want to lose it.
