{"id":548,"date":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-05T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/cage\/2016\/09\/06\/methane-sensor-retrieved-by-rv-polarstern\/"},"modified":"2023-04-04T10:33:28","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T08:33:28","slug":"methane-sensor-retrieved-by-rv-polarstern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/cage\/2016\/09\/06\/methane-sensor-retrieved-by-rv-polarstern\/","title":{"rendered":"Methane sensor retrieved by RV Polarstern"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>German research\u00a0vessel\u00a0Polarstern has retrieved a CAGE methane sensor from 2600-meter water depth in the Fram Strait.<\/h4>\n<h6>Text: Maja Sojtaric<\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>CAGE deployed a methane sensor and a CTD during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awi.de\/en\/expedition\/ships\/polarstern.html\">RV Polarstern-expedition<\/a> to the deep- sea observatory <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awi.de\/en\/science\/special-groups\/deep-sea-research.html\">Hausgarten<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main motivation for <a href=\"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/cage\/news\/new-methane-sensor-installed-in-the-arctic-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our participation<\/a> in the Polarstern cruise was to install the sensors on a deep lander at Hausgarten, and acquire long term observations of methane concentrations and variations in water masses.\u201d says PhD candidate P\u00e4r Jansson who participated in the expedition last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important reference site<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hausgarten is a network of 21 moorings and observatories at water depths ranging between 250 m and 5500 m in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fram_Strait\">Fram Strait<\/a>. RV Polarstern has revisited the observatory annually for the past 18 years, collecting long-term ecological data sampled by different instruments throughout the network.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3210\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3210\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3210 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/cage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/methane-sensor_polarstern.png\" alt=\"Methane sensor with battery packs and CTD. Jansson\/CAGE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>RV Polarstern retrieved CAGE sensors earlier this summer providing long-term observations of methane release in the Arctic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Data sampling of methane on the deep lander started on August 14<sup>th<\/sup> 2015 and the sensors were successfully recovered on June 26<sup>th<\/sup> this year, providing a long data time series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d This will give CAGE researchers a better understanding of the natural yearly methane variations. The data from the central Hausgarten site will mainly serve as a reference for<a href=\"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/cage\/news\/cage-observatories-successfully-deployed-arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> CAGE observatories in the shallow waters,<\/a> as the methane sensor was deployed in an area where no deep-water gas hydrate has been found and no methane seepage has been previously observed.\u201d concludes Jansson.<\/p>\n<p>This work was conducted within the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fixo3.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FixO3 project<\/a>, which seeks to integrate European open ocean fixed-point observatories.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>German research\u00a0vessel\u00a0Polarstern has retrieved a CAGE methane sensor from 2600-meter water depth in the Fram &hellip;
