Despite the prolonged radio silence (sorry about that!), we&#8217;ve been keeping ourselves busy. Here are some highlights of the past couple of weeks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CASTL phonologists traversed basically the entire continent (and then some) to invade Marrakech and give not one, but several talks at <a title=\"OCP8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.almoubdia.co.uk\/ocp8\" target=\"_blank\">OC\ufeffP8<\/a>, one of the field&#8217;s premier conferences. On the program were PhD students <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.uit.no\/a\/iosad\" target=\"_blank\">Pavel Iosad<\/a> (<em>Explaining licensing mismatches in Welsh<\/em>),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/castl.uit.no\/index.php?option=com_comprofiler&amp;task=userProfile&amp;user=112&amp;Itemid=118\" target=\"_blank\">Violeta Mart\u00ednez-Paricio<\/a> (<em>Vowel sequences, vowel clusters and unmarked stress in Spanish<\/em>), \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.uit.no\/a\/surkalovic\/\">Dragana \u0160urkalovi\u0107<\/a> (<em>Phase-Phase Faithfulness<\/em>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.uit.no\/a\/youssef\" target=\"_blank\">Islam Youssef<\/a> (<em>Labialization in Baghdadi Arabic: features and constraints<\/em>), while CASTL affiliate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.uit.no\/a\/kramer\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Kr\u00e4mer<\/a> presented <em>Optimizing Lexical Optimization<\/em>. Also on the program were former CASTL postdoc Christian Uffmann (now of the University of Sussex) and Patrycja Strycharczuk of the University of Manchester, a graduate of the Master&#8217;s program here in Troms\u00f8.<\/li>\n<li>Keeping to the topic of CASTL phonologists, senior researcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.uit.no\/a\/iosad\" target=\"_blank\">Bruce Mor\u00e9n-Duollj\u00e1<\/a> spent the week in the Netherlands teaching a course on <em>Phonological Feature Theory <\/em>at the important LOT Winter School 2011 (see course description <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lotschool.nl\/files\/schools\/2011%20Winterschool%20UvA\/coursedescriptions\/Moren.php\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>CASTL affiliate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.uit.no\/a\/mcfadden\" target=\"_blank\">Tom McFadden<\/a> and PhD student <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.uit.no\/a\/sundaresan\" target=\"_blank\">Sandhya Sundaresan<\/a> also headed for warmer climes &#8211; but that is not to say they were in it just for the sun. In fact, they gave a talk at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnu.ac.in\/\" target=\"_blank\">JNU Delhi<\/a> entitled <em>Against the dependence of nominative case on finiteness<\/em>. Also, be sure to check out <a href=\"http:\/\/castl.uit.no\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=199:-finiteness-in-south-asian-languages-&amp;catid=76:conferencesaworkshops\" target=\"_blank\">this workshop<\/a> on <em>Finiteness in South Asian languages<\/em> that Sandhya, Tom and CASTL senior researcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.uit.no\/a\/ramchand\" target=\"_blank\">Gillian Ramchand<\/a> are organizing in Troms\u00f8 in June.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whew, that was a long blog entry. Actually, more news are coming up, but let&#8217;s keep it shorter, shall we?
