{"id":552,"date":"2017-10-17T09:08:49","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T07:08:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/castl\/?p=552"},"modified":"2017-10-17T09:09:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T07:09:27","slug":"the-joys-of-minimizing-description-length","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/castl\/2017\/10\/17\/the-joys-of-minimizing-description-length\/","title":{"rendered":"The joys of minimizing description length"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week we will be treated to two presentations by Roni Katzir on compression-based learning.<\/p>\n<p>In the LAVA lunch session on Thursday (high noon), he will discuss \u201can adequate simplicity metric for learning grammars,\u201d going over three alternatives and arguing that compression-based simplicity (roughly, aiming for minimal description length) is the best for induction.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in the colloquium slot (a quarter past two), he will present a talk entitled &#8220;Comparing theories of UG using compression-based learning,\u201d in which he will go into more depth on the qualities of compression-based learning.
