Peter Svenonius has compiled a list <a href=\"http:\/\/blogg.uit.no\/psv000\/\">here<\/a> of the most cited works, according to Google Scholar. Near the top are general works by Saussure, Sapir, and Jespersen, Lakoff\u2019s work on metaphor, Searle on speech acts, Grice on pragmatics, Halliday on functional linguistics, Brown and Levinson on politeness, and a whole bunch of Chomsky.<\/p>\n<p>Other oldies include works by Jakobson, Greenberg, Quine, Labov, and Lenneberg.<\/p>\n<p>Classics in generative linguistics include Ross\u2019 thesis on islands, Heim\u2019s thesis on indefinites, Abney\u2019s thesis on DP structure, Baker\u2019s book on incorporation, and Pollock\u2019s paper on splitting Infl.<\/p>\n<p>More recent entries (from the 90\u2019s on) include Kayne\u2019s antisymmetry book, Cinque\u2019s 1999 book, Rizzi\u2019s left periphery paper, and several of Chomsky\u2019s Minimalist papers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do you think are the most influential works in linguistics?
