The project is called HELPING, which is an acronym for \u2018<strong>H<\/strong>eritage-Bilingual\u00a0<strong>L<\/strong>inguistic\u00a0<strong>P<\/strong>roficiency\u00a0<strong>I<\/strong>n the\u00a0<strong>N<\/strong>ative\u00a0<strong>G<\/strong>rammar\u2019, and the project has a subtitle, \u2018Charting and Explaining Differences\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The project will run from August 2019 until August 2023, and has a budget of over 25 million kroner (about 3 million euros), and is bundled together with a permanent full-time position in Troms\u00f8 for Jason.<\/p>\n<p>The following text comes from the project description:<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>primary objective\u00a0<\/em>of\u00a0<strong>HeLPiNG<\/strong>\u00a0is to answer one of the most perplexing questions in bilingualism research today:\u00a0<em>Why is HLB characterized by such variation in grammatical knowledge and language use when this is not the case for monolinguals?\u00a0<\/em>by addressing these equally fundamental\u00a0<strong>secondary objective\u00a0<\/strong>questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(<strong>Aim 1<\/strong>)\u00a0<em>when and why do developing monolinguals and HSs begin to diverge for the same language?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0(<strong>Aim 2<\/strong><em>) at what levels (under what modalities of testing) do HSs truly differ (introducing neuro (EEG\/ERP) methods to this question)?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0(<strong>Aim 3<\/strong>)\u00a0<em>what is the role of the (lack of) HL literacy in explaining (some) observed HS outcomes?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>There are three work packages:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WP1 addresses the dearth of late childhood data issue, namely that most heritage bilingual research is conducted with young adults at an end-state of acquisition as opposed to development in real time.\n<ul>\n<li>It is the first methodology to address the developmental angle of heritage grammars with a unique \u00a0method that combines cross-sections tested over a 4 year period, capturing at the end data representing 15 years of development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>WP2 and WP3 use psycho-\/neuro- linguistic methodologies (the very first brain study of its kind).\n<ul>\n<li>These methods will reveal the depth of \u201cdifference\u201d by looking directly at how the heritage language is processed in real time and if predictive processing is qualitative similar in HSs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Rothman has been awarded a huge grant by Troms\u00f8 Forskningsstiftelse to conduct research into bilingualism in Troms\u00f8.
