OASIS –\u00a0Ontology As Structured by the Interfaces with Semantics –<\/strong><\/a><\/h1>\n
is a CNRS-based interdisciplinary network project connecting CASTL to linguistic centers in\u00a0Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, London, and the US to study formal semantic ontology.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The first OASIS meeting, OASIS 0<\/a>, took place in Troms\u00f8;<\/div>\n
OASIS 1<\/a> was in Paris, and the third meeting, OASIS 2<\/a>, will<\/div>\n
take place in Nantes, France, on October 16-18, 2019.<\/div>\n

Description<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n
The OASIS conference series aims to promote conversation and<\/div>\n
cross-fertilization across different disciplines, using ontological<\/div>\n
questions as shared reference points. The broad questions in the<\/div>\n
background are these:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
1. What basic ontological building blocks do we use to talk and think<\/div>\n
about the world?<\/div>\n
2. How do these building blocks get combined?<\/div>\n
3. How do grammatical and cognitive phenomena motivate the answers to the<\/div>\n
first two questions?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We welcome contributions from semanticists as well as from researchers in<\/div>\n
domains of cognition that interface with semantics.\u00a0\u00a0We would like the<\/div>\n
OASIS conferences to help foster new perspectives and to provide a forum<\/div>\n
around which a new research community can coalesce.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
OASIS 1 (Paris, November 2018)<\/div>\n
brought together researchers from formal semantics, natural language<\/div>\n
syntax, philosophy, psychology\/psycholinguistics, language development,<\/div>\n
neuroscience\/neurolinguistics, and computational linguistics.\u00a0\u00a0Some<\/div>\n
aspects of the exchanges at OASIS 1 are summarized on the OASIS 1 site<\/div>\n
(http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\/oasis1<\/a>) and on Gillian Ramchand\u2019s blog<\/div>\n
(https:\/\/gillianramchand.blog\/2018\/11\/<\/a> ).\u00a0\u00a0The range of talks at OASIS 1<\/div>\n
gives an indication of the kinds of topics that we welcome at OASIS<\/div>\n
conferences.\u00a0\u00a0There were, for instance, talks about flexible aspects of<\/div>\n
linguistic meaning, about categorization in verbal vs. nonverbal<\/div>\n
populations, about the acquisition of counterfactuality and its linguistic<\/div>\n
expression, and about the format of syntactic structure from an embodied<\/div>\n
cognition perspective.\u00a0\u00a0The OASIS credo at http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\/credo<\/a><\/div>\n
lists a variety of topics relevant to the broad questions that interest<\/div>\n
us.<\/div>\n

Call for submissions:<\/strong><\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n
We invite submissions of abstracts for 30-minute oral presentations (+ 10<\/div>\n
minutes discussion) on any topic pertaining to the shared interests and<\/div>\n
assumptions of the OASIS network, as well as for poster presentations with<\/div>\n
lightning talks. Abstracts should be submitted via the EasyChair page<\/div>\n
https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=oasis2<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0The deadline for<\/div>\n
submissions is 9am GMT on Saturday June 15 2019.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Abstracts must be anonymous and should be at most 2 pages (A4 or US<\/div>\n
Letter) in length, including examples and references, using a 12pt font<\/div>\n
with 1 inch (2.5 cm) margins on all four sides. These limitations will be<\/div>\n
strictly enforced. A single author can send no more than one<\/div>\n
singly-authored and one co-authored abstract, or two co-authored<\/div>\n
abstracts. Your submission should specify whether it is to be considered<\/div>\n
for an oral presentation or a poster. We will not accept papers that at<\/div>\n
the time of the conference have been published or have been accepted for<\/div>\n
publication.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Please keep in mind that this is an interdisciplinary conference, and<\/div>\n
write your abstract accordingly. This means that the broad goals of the<\/div>\n
research (e.g. to understand language architecture, to understand brain<\/div>\n
architecture) and any subgoals should be mentioned. We very much welcome<\/div>\n
work that brings attention to data from less-familiar languages; if you<\/div>\n
propose such an abstract, keep the dataset as streamlined as possible to<\/div>\n
give the audience a chance to understand the issues at stake. Finally, if<\/div>\n
you work in a formal framework, your proposal must be explained in words<\/div>\n
as well as in your formal framework.<\/div>\n
