{"id":793,"date":"2019-04-10T11:48:50","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T09:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/castl\/?p=793"},"modified":"2019-04-10T11:49:54","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T09:49:54","slug":"oasis-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/castl\/2019\/04\/10\/oasis-2\/","title":{"rendered":"OASIS 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\"><strong>OASIS &#8211;\u00a0Ontology As Structured by the Interfaces with Semantics &#8211;<\/strong><\/a><\/h1>\n<div>is a CNRS-based interdisciplinary network project connecting CASTL to linguistic centers in\u00a0Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, London, and the US to study formal semantic ontology.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The first OASIS meeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/castl\/events\/workshop-on-the-emergence-of-semantic-features\/\">OASIS 0<\/a>, took place in Troms\u00f8;<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\/oasis1\">OASIS 1<\/a> was in Paris, and the third meeting, <a href=\"http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\/oasis2\">OASIS 2<\/a>, will<\/div>\n<div>take place in Nantes, France, on October 16-18, 2019.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Invited speakers:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Sudha Arunachalam (New York University)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Rose-Marie D\u00e9chaine (University of British Columbia)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Nicola Guarino (ISTC &#8211; CNR)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Angelika Kratzer (UMass Amherst)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Brent Strickland (IJN &#8211; CNRS)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Description<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The OASIS conference series aims to promote conversation and<\/div>\n<div>cross-fertilization across different disciplines, using ontological<\/div>\n<div>questions as shared reference points. The broad questions in the<\/div>\n<div>background are these:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1. What basic ontological building blocks do we use to talk and think<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">about the world?<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">2. How do these building blocks get combined?<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">3. How do grammatical and cognitive phenomena motivate the answers to the<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">first two questions?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We welcome contributions from semanticists as well as from researchers in<\/div>\n<div>domains of cognition that interface with semantics.\u00a0\u00a0We would like the<\/div>\n<div>OASIS conferences to help foster new perspectives and to provide a forum<\/div>\n<div>around which a new research community can coalesce.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>OASIS 1 (Paris, November 2018)<\/div>\n<div>brought together researchers from formal semantics, natural language<\/div>\n<div>syntax, philosophy, psychology\/psycholinguistics, language development,<\/div>\n<div>neuroscience\/neurolinguistics, and computational linguistics.\u00a0\u00a0Some<\/div>\n<div>aspects of the exchanges at OASIS 1 are summarized on the OASIS 1 site<\/div>\n<div>(<a href=\"http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\/oasis1\">http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\/oasis1<\/a>) and on Gillian Ramchand\u2019s blog<\/div>\n<div>(<a href=\"https:\/\/gillianramchand.blog\/2018\/11\/\">https:\/\/gillianramchand.blog\/2018\/11\/<\/a> ).\u00a0\u00a0The range of talks at OASIS 1<\/div>\n<div>gives an indication of the kinds of topics that we welcome at OASIS<\/div>\n<div>conferences.\u00a0\u00a0There were, for instance, talks about flexible aspects of<\/div>\n<div>linguistic meaning, about categorization in verbal vs. nonverbal<\/div>\n<div>populations, about the acquisition of counterfactuality and its linguistic<\/div>\n<div>expression, and about the format of syntactic structure from an embodied<\/div>\n<div>cognition perspective.\u00a0\u00a0The OASIS credo at <a href=\"http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\/credo\">http:\/\/oasis.cnrs.fr\/credo<\/a><\/div>\n<div>lists a variety of topics relevant to the broad questions that interest<\/div>\n<div>us.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Call for submissions:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We invite submissions of abstracts for 30-minute oral presentations (+ 10<\/div>\n<div>minutes discussion) on any topic pertaining to the shared interests and<\/div>\n<div>assumptions of the OASIS network, as well as for poster presentations with<\/div>\n<div>lightning talks. Abstracts should be submitted via the EasyChair page<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=oasis2\">https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=oasis2<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0The deadline for<\/div>\n<div>submissions is 9am GMT on Saturday June 15 2019.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Abstracts must be anonymous and should be at most 2 pages (A4 or US<\/div>\n<div>Letter) in length, including examples and references, using a 12pt font<\/div>\n<div>with 1 inch (2.5 cm) margins on all four sides. These limitations will be<\/div>\n<div>strictly enforced. A single author can send no more than one<\/div>\n<div>singly-authored and one co-authored abstract, or two co-authored<\/div>\n<div>abstracts. Your submission should specify whether it is to be considered<\/div>\n<div>for an oral presentation or a poster. We will not accept papers that at<\/div>\n<div>the time of the conference have been published or have been accepted for<\/div>\n<div>publication.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Please keep in mind that this is an interdisciplinary conference, and<\/div>\n<div>write your abstract accordingly. This means that the broad goals of the<\/div>\n<div>research (e.g. to understand language architecture, to understand brain<\/div>\n<div>architecture) and any subgoals should be mentioned. We very much welcome<\/div>\n<div>work that brings attention to data from less-familiar languages; if you<\/div>\n<div>propose such an abstract, keep the dataset as streamlined as possible to<\/div>\n<div>give the audience a chance to understand the issues at stake.
