EWMA – BARCUT successful Cruise
With the UiT research vessel Helmer Hansen, five environmental geologists and two microbiologists from EWMA and BARCUT, conducted 19-25 June a successful cruise stretching from Longyearbyen to Hammerfest and Repparfjord. The purpose was to sample sea floor sediments to look for traces of petroleum- and mining- activity in the southwest Barents Sea and high north coastal areas. One hundred and fourteen stations sampled, using multi-corer, box-corer and gravity-corer.
The amount of stations was also a result of problems getting proper samples. Sometimes equipment failed, or non-penetrable sediments prevented us from getting cores of acceptable quality or a sample of interest. Material for months of work in the lab is collected. The results will help to further understand environmental effects, improve modelling and prediction of potential impacts.
