Project Description
The overall vision of the work package is to strengthen knowledge within sustainable development of industrial waste management by developing methods for reducing the amount of hazardous waste on-site and simultaneously increasing the recycling potential.
Electrochemical remediation (applying low current) provides a method for reducing the amount of hazardous waste by mobilising and removing pollutants from different polluted materials such as soil, sediments, sludge, wood, concrete, fly ash and water.
The work package consists of a PhD project in which the focus is on remediation of polluted harbour sediments in the Arctic Regions of Norway,Greenland and NW Russia. The main objective is to develop and optimise electrodialytic remediation of heavy metals, PAHs, PCBs, TBT and oil products from polluted harbour sediments using multivariate analysis (statistical tool).
The project has an industrial focus with the objective of making the method applicable for companies engaged in waste management and/or the oil- and mining industries in the Arctic regions. Part of the project is to develop a mobile remediation test unit, increasing the potential of on-site remediation and hence reducing transport costs and environmental risks of transporting large amounts of hazardous waste over longer distances.
The project group consists of a PhD student, a supervisor and two co-supervisors:
PhD student: Kristine Bondo Pedersen, Department of Chemistry, Arctic University of Norway
Supervisor: Tore Lejon, Department of Chemistry, Arctic University of Norway
Co-supervisors: Pernille E. Jensen, Arctic Technology Centre, Technical University of Denmark; Lisbeth M. Ottosen, Department of Civil Engineering, Technical University of Denmark.
Participants are part of the UArctic Thematic Network on Environmental Impact Assessment of Industry Contaminated Areas.
