WP 1: ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF OPERATIONAL DISCHARGES AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE

Objectives
The overall objective, based on a life cycle analysis perspective, is to identify and fill knowledge gaps that restrict scientific sound decision making, management and selection of best available techniques (BAT) for industrial operations in the northern Norwegian region. To achieve the objective, focused field and experimental effect studies targeting sentinel species of the relevant ecosystems will be conducted. The field studies/experiments will be planned in close collaboration with the activities conducted through WP2. Three post doc positions are allocated to the WP1 activities and include one ecotoxicologist with a biological background and one ecotoxicologist with a chemical background that will work as a team. The post doc candidates will work as a team and in close collaboration with the two associate professors of WP3, the oil and environment research group at Akvaplan-niva, as well as any other relevant partners of the EWMA consortium. The third post doc will work within social science and resource governance.

Accomplishment

  • Task I:
Effects of mining discharges on affected species (pelagic)
  • Task II:
Effects of drill cuttings on vulnerable habitats (bentic)
  • Task III:
Effects of chronic exposure to produced water on relevant species (e.g pelagic larvae)
  • Task IV: Risk based strategy and Resource Governance
