In doing so, we want to examine the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(1) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How do the HL grammars develop overtime from middle childhood to early adolescence\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(2) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What variables explain and influence the development of HL grammars?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By testing over 300 heritage speakers from the ages of 6 to 18, we are able to construct a holistic picture of the developmental trajectories of HL grammars, as well as revealing predictive correlations with key experience-based variables that explain the path and continuum of HLB outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>1.2 Which heritage language?\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our project will involve <\/span><b>Japanese<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> heritage speakers worldwide. We will work with Japanese Saturday schools and community centres in USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Norway, China etc. to examine the language development in Japanese as a heritage language. As of 2019, there are over a million Japanese citizens living abroad (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofa.go.jp\/mofaj\/toko\/page22_000043.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">). We will target various Japanese communities from<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>1.3 Which aspect(s) of language?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><b>Classifiers: <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Classifiers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are a grammatical system that reflect how speakers categorize objects that they count or quantify.
