On Thursday 8 March, the ICE project held their first seminar at UiT. There was a round of introductions, where each member presented themselves, their background, and their role in the research project.<\/p><\/div>\n

Kjersti Fj\u00f8rtoft gave a presentation about \u2018Active Citizenship\u2019, and how the idea of citizenship fits into the Liberal and Republican political models, which sparked a lively debate concerning the concept of citizenship, how the indigenous mindset intersects with these models, and how this can be applied to education and the teaching of citizenship.<\/p><\/div>\n

Some interesting questions were raised regarding citizenship\u00a0 – as a set of knowledge and skills; how an indigenous perspective can be incorporated into the curriculum; observation research of the educational framework; and some general thoughts on what makes a \u2018good citizen\u2019.<\/p><\/div>\n

It was an enthusiastic start to the project, and certainly gave members some ideas for further discussion. As Torjer Olsen remarked,\u00a0\u2018It was good to meet in person and to start the conversation about the project. Most importantly, the seminar enabled us to reflect upon the concept of citizenship and how to apply this in the actual research\u2019.<\/p><\/div>\n
