Appealing particularly to students and scholars of Sámi education, this new collection of works represents an overview of Sámi education through both historical and international comparative perspectives. In the introduction, the editors state that the book has two main goals: the first is to provide a critical examination of the history of Indigenous education through various groups, and the second is to evaluate possible future initiatives within Indigenous education.[1] Since the Sámi people live within multiple countries in the Arctic, the collection has been published in English and is thus accessible to a more international readership. Though the anthology primarily focuses on the Sámi education context in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, it also includes chapters highlighting other Indigenous education cases in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

An exciting new anthology on Sámi education

Not only is the main subject of the book directly relevant to the aims of the Indigenous Citizenship and Education Project, but also several members of the project have contributed to the new publication, including Torjer A. Olsen and Hanna Outakoski. In his chapter titled, “Sámi Issues in Norwegian Curricula: A Historical Overview,” Torjer A. Olsen gives the context for education history in Norway related to the Sámi and argues the legal foundation for the inclusion of Indigenous topics into the Norwegian national education system should demonstrate that the majority society can learn from Indigenous people and minorities, and needs greater knowledge of those groups in general.[2] In, “The Development of Sámi Children’s Right to Learn Sámi in the Russian School Context,” Ekaterina Zmyvalova and Hanna Outakoski highlight the lack of Sámi language education opportunities in Russia and utilize a socio-legal method to discuss the legal issues surrounding Indigenous linguistic rights in the country.[3] Reflecting his contribution to the book as a member of the project, Torjer Olsen states, “It is a great pleasure and honor to take part in such an important and relevant book. For the ICE project and the Centre for Sámi Studies, it shows that our work goes into a bigger community of scholars on Sámi and Indigenous education”.

This published collection of works has already received praise from the international academic community. Professor of Sustainability Science at the University of Helsinki, Reetta Toivanen called the book a, “very important volume on indigenous educational history,” stating that it is, “the first comprehensive volume on Sami educational history.”[4] Mhairi C. Beaton, Senior Lecturer in Special Educational Need at Leeds Beckett University, concurred that the collection is a, “much needed anthology that takes a critical perspective on the history and future of Indigenous education,” adding that while it primarily focuses on the Scandinavian context, it also creates, “the opportunity to explore Indigenous education in diverse international contexts across the globe.”[5]

To learn more about the history of Sámi education and how it fits into the broader international Indigenous education context, as well as to see what some members of the Indigenous Citizenship and Education Project have also been working on, be sure to check out this exciting new anthology.

This publication is also available online at: https://www.palgrave.com/gp/book/9783030241117

DOI: 10.1007/978-3-030-24112-4

References:

[1] Kortekangas, O., et al.
