Lisa Lunney Borden
Lisa Lunney Borden is an Associate Professor at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. For more than twenty years she has been working with mathematics education for Mi’kmaw youth and her doctoral dissertation (Lunney Borden, 2010) focused on this. Mi’kmaq are a First Nations people from Atlantic Canada. Dr. Lunney Borden cooperates with Mi’kmaw teachers and elders, and her research is about how to be responsive to the Indigenous language, culture, values and how it may affect the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Lunney Borden worked with David Wagner and teachers and elders from the Mi’kmaw community to develop “Show Me Your Math”. The program invites children of different First Nations people to explore mathematics in the contexts of their own communities. One component of the program is the development of culture-based, exploratory projects in Mi’kmaw schools and in public schools. These projects are based on Indigenous knowledge and begins from a place honouring local knowledge as context for mathematics learning.
Dr. Lunney Borden will hold a plenary lecture at IndigMEC.
