The International Research Network on Artful Dementia brings together scholars from the social sciences, humanities and the arts, and connects situated intervention and arts-based research.
The network’s mandate is to pioneer a novel endeavour to develop an ethically sustainable qualitative research method for inquiring into living a gracious everyday life with dementia. Our approach builds on the idea that generating new, unique knowledge entails intertwining, intervening in, and unpacking of on-going practices. By doing so, we open up for unexpected responses from the field. This is an audacious process, as we cannot in advance know what will happen. However, given current dominant understandings of dementia in which decay equals loss, such exposure to the unexpected is particularly important to perform innovative research and generate new knowledge.
