Five students are sitting here, full of impressions and emotions. We are incredibly grateful for all the wonderful experiences we’ve shared with the teachers and students at Vulumzi over the past four weeks.

This week began with us receiving our “invigilator badges,” indicating that we’re approved as exam monitors. It was, of course, very amusing that the teachers made identical badges for us, similar to the ones they wear during the exam period. The week has been characterized by exam-focused work, where we’ve prepared question sheets and similar materials for this purpose. We’ve also spent many hours as exam monitors, which was a valuable experience to bring with us moving forward. On Wednesday evening, we were invited to dinner at Eileen’s house, along with Brynjulv, Silje, Sylvan, and the other group. It was very enjoyable, and we had a great time. We also had the chance to talk a bit about our experiences and insights from our practice.

On Thursday, we had our last day at the school with the learners and teachers. In the morning, we were greeted by teachers dressed in their national attire, with a small surprise waiting for each of us at our seats. Brynjulv and Silje also came to visit, and we got to show them around the school a bit. The day was spent playing various African games with the students, having lovely conversations, and taking lots of pictures. You quickly notice how strong relationships are built through these kinds of activities with the learners.

The week ended with a farewell ceremony for us, where the teachers had put together a program and prepared various traditional African dishes. There were many heartfelt speeches by the principal and other teachers. We also got to reply to the speeches and tell them how grateful we are for the warmth they have shown us. It was truly touching to see everything they had organized for us. Naturally, it was very difficult to say goodbye to all those we’ve spent the past month with. We are truly grateful for the warm welcome we received, for the care and love shown to us, for the trust and learning. And most of all, we’re so happy to have met so many wonderful learners and to have had the opportunity to teach and experience a culture so different from our own in Norway.

As a last pedagogical theme in this blog, we will write a bit about how health and life skills as a theme is expressed at Vulumzi SSS. The most specific example of how health and life skills are worked with in the school, is in the subject “life orientation”. Life orientation is a subject which combines theoretical and physical education. They work with topics such as “Hiv and Aids” in the theoretical part of the subject, expanding their knowledge about important topics. While in the physical part they play games, dance and do various other activities together outside at the soccer field. However, health and life skills also seem to be taught indirectly in other subjects. For example, there was an English visual text where the theme was healthy foods to eat. Even though the focus was on visual literacy and comprehension, they also learn about health this way. Life skills is expressed through the general attitude of Vulumzi teachers and learners, by taking care of each other and supporting one another. This is also called “Ubuntu”, which is a word for unity.

– Anja, Elise, Maria, Amalie and Frida

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”60px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_post_nav _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_post_nav][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

And so, the last day of the last week at Vulumzi has come to an end.
