This working group focuses on the relationship between former (and current) hunter-gatherers and the modern African state, including economic, political, and legal processes.  Particular attention is paid to processes of assimilation and resistance to it.

The group is working on a comparative analysis of the relationships between indigenous peoples and the state in Botswana, Namibia, Rwanda and Ethiopia.
