1. Preparing\u00a0for your trip to Troms\u00f8<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Mind the weather! Historically, September is a relatively mild month \u2500 by Arctic standards. Last year, the average temperature was around 10 \u00baC, but it can get all the way down to 3 \u00baC, so please pack warm clothes. Make sure you have a\u00a0waterproof jacket with a hood or a small umbrella in case it rains (for some\u00a0reason, nobody really seems to use umbrellas here in the Arctic).<\/p>\n

The good news is that temperatures inside campus buildings are\u00a0always very mild and comfortable (and there is underground transit between them, so you don’t have to go outside to move around if you don’t want to). Therefore, the winning combination is: warm\u00a0jacket + not-too-thick clothes inside. If you are curious, you can follow the weather forecast for the Workshop days at Yr<\/a>\u00a0(available\u00a0in English).<\/p>\n

2. Arrival and transport from the airport<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

So, you landed at Troms\u00f8 Airport. Welcome! The town centre and the University are located on the\u00a0small island of Troms\u00f8ya, so distances are short, and the airport is\u00a0very close to everything. There are several ways to get to the city from\u00a0the airport:<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0Bus<\/strong>: regular local transport can easily get you from and to the\u00a0airport. There are two lines that get there, number 40 and number 42 (number 24 is projected to stop there too in the coming months, but this bus does not connect to the city centre).\u00a0Both buses go to the centre (Sentrum<\/em>), and also to Gi\u00e6verbukta<\/em>\u00a0(close to Jekta Storsenter<\/em>, the largest mall in Troms\u00f8) \u2500 the main transport\u00a0hub where you can change buses and take any other line. Note that\u00a0Gi\u00e6verbukta<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>is the first stop<\/span> after the airport. See\u00a0below for further info on regular buses, how to find the bus stop, etc.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Taxi<\/strong>: taxi fares are expensive in Troms\u00f8 \u2500 a\u00a0taxi from the airport to the city center costs on average 200-250 NOK, approximately $25-30 (for a 10 minute ride!) However, it might be a good option if you share. The taxi line is located right outside the airport, to the\u00a0right as you walk out.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Airport Express Coach<\/strong> (Flybussen<\/a>): A one-way ticket costs 100 NOK (160 return), and it\u00a0stops at some of the major hotels. It departs from the airport itself, close to the taxi area.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Using the local buses<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

3.1. Tickets and fares, and where to buy<\/span><\/p>\n

A one-way ticket costs around 50\u00a0NOK ($6) if bought from the driver (note that\u00a0buses do not<\/strong> accept cards, only\u00a0cash!), or 36 NOK\u00a0if bought in advance. There are, however, two main ways to make this cheaper. The first is\u00a0to buy a temporary travelcard (periodebillett mini<\/em>) with unlimited\u00a0travel: 100 NOK for a 24-hour ticket, and 240 NOK for a 7-day one.\u00a0If you decide to get the\u00a0temporary card, you can buy it directly at the airport. When you\u00a0exit the arrivals area, you will see right in front of you a shop called\u00a0Point, where they sell them. You can pay with card here. (Note<\/strong>: There is construction going on in that area at the moment, so the kiosk may not be open when you come).<\/p>\n

The second and by far the best way to save is to download the Troms Mobillett<\/em> app on your smartphone. With this app, which can be set in English, you can buy single tickets (at a discounted price, 33 NOK) as well as\u00a024-hour\u00a0and 7-day travel cards. You can also buy tickets for the night bus (80 NOK). You need to associate a debit or credit card with Troms Mobillett<\/em>\u00a0for it to charge the tickets there. To download it, click on your phone type: Android<\/a> \u2500 iPhone<\/a> You can set it up from home, before you come.<\/p>\n

3.2. Routes and timetables <\/span><\/p>\n

The same website also has this\u00a0information. You can search for bus connections between two stops,\u00a0and you can also search for street names and it will automatically give\u00a0you the closest stops. Again, for a smartphone experience, you can download the official route planner app, Troms Reise<\/em>, which includes the same features plus a GPS function and real-time schedules: Android<\/a> \u2500 iPhone<\/a><\/p>\n

3.3. Getting to the bus stop<\/span><\/p>\n

Do not exit the airport on the same\u00a0floor you have arrived at (that will only take you to the\u00a0taxi stop and the airport express bus)! Instead, take the elevator down one level. You will end up\u00a0in a parking garage\u00a0\u2500\u00a0go straight ahead, crossing the garage, and you will see a street. Across the street is the bus stop for regular buses\u00a0going in\u00a0the direction you are interested in (Sentrum). Taking the bus from the\u00a0other side of the street (the one closer to the airport) would\u00a0take you to\u00a0the\u00a0nearby island of Kval\u00f8ya, which offers picturesque views, but it might not be the\u00a0best thing to take a trip there with your luggage.<\/p>\n

3.4. In the bus<\/span><\/p>\n

If you have a smartphone-ticket or need to buy a\u00a0ticket with cash, always enter the bus through the first doors, so the\u00a0driver can validate your ticket\/sell you one. Also, be aware that stops\u00a0are not always announced (the more modern buses have screens with the route, but this is not 100% sure) and that the bus does not stop unless the Stop\u00a0button is pressed beforehand. So if you need to get off at a certain\u00a0stop and you do not know where it is, it is best to ask the driver\u00a0and\/or other passengers to point it out to you. Generally, people are very\u00a0helpful and friendly, and most bus drivers speak English.<\/p>\n

3.5. Where to get off?<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are staying in the city centre, your destination is on the route of\u00a0buses 40 (get off at Wito<\/em>) and 42 (get off at Sj\u00f8gata S3<\/em>). If not,\u00a0you can change either around the centre area (last stop for both of\u00a0them), or at Gi\u00e6verbukta<\/em>\u00a0\u2500 which you will recognize because there are a\u00a0lot of buses parked there, and by its proximity to the Jekta Storsenter<\/em> and some relatively big\u00a0supermakets. Use the route planner on the website or on the Troms Reise app\u00a0to plan\u00a0your trip. The airport stop is called Flyplassen<\/em>.<\/p>\n

4. Getting to the conference venue <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Our workshop\u00a0takes place at\u00a0the main UiT campus, and it is very easy to get there with\u00a0local buses.\u00a0The main ones that go there from the centre are 20, 21 and 34\u00a0(although there are others). You can find their timetables on the website<\/a>\u00a0or in the Troms Reise<\/em> app, but there should be one of these coming every 5 to 10 minutes. You want to get off at the bus stop called\u00a0UiT<\/em>. There is another stop, UiT\/Planetariet<\/em>, which is also close.<\/p>\n

From there, the way to the workshop venue is easy. Follow the instructions on the map below to get to the Humanities building. As you come in, you will see a corridor open to the left. There will be signs indicating where E.0101<\/strong><\/span> is, but that is the room you have to mention if you ask anyone for directions.<\/p>\n

5. Facilities on campus<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

5.1. Internet<\/span><\/p>\n

Eduroam is widely available on campus. UiT also has guest networks, in case you don’t have access to eduroam \u2500 once on site, we will give you instructions on how to get online.<\/p>\n

5.2. Projectors<\/span><\/p>\n

If your have slides for your presentation, there will of\u00a0course be a computer and projectors in the room, with a wide range of adapters. However, it is always wise to\u00a0have both your laptop with a relevant adapter, and the presentation\u00a0on a USB stick, just in case. You can also email us the presentation, and we will put it in the computer for you. For the latter, remember that not all computers have special fonts\/symbols\/IPA\/etc, so it is generally a good idea to use\u00a0a PDF version of the presentation to make sure that everything looks as you designed it.<\/p>\n

5.3. Handouts<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, there is no possibility of printing your\u00a0handouts on site, so if you wish to use them, please bring them already printed. The total number of participants is going to be around 45.<\/p>\n

6. Other matters<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

6.1. Currency, cash and exchange<\/span><\/p>\n

Norwegians mostly rely on cards, so you can pay with one in virtually all\u00a0places (hotel,\u00a0supermarket, shops, restaurants, bars\u2026) Check with your bank if\u00a0you can make payments abroad, as it might be cheaper for you than\u00a0taking out cash or exchanging it. The fees for international payments\u00a0depend on your own bank. The only place\u00a0where you will need\u00a0cash is the local bus (if you pay\u00a0for each trip individually to the driver, which is really not\u00a0recommended, see above).<\/p>\n

There are no ATMs on\u00a0campus, but there are a few in the town centre (where the banks are: SpareBank NordNorge1, DNB). Banks do not exchange currency, so if you need\u00a0to do that, you can go to the post office (not very convenient) or use\u00a0the exchange machine in the airport right when you arrive. It works\u00a0for NOK, EUR, USD, SEK and GBP. Bear in mind that exchange rates are not very advantageous, and that\u00a0fees\u00a0are relatively high.<\/p>\n

6.2. Other activities<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are staying longer than strictly for the workshop\u00a0days and you want to visit the town and its surroundings, all the relevant\u00a0information on attractions and activities can be found on this page<\/a>.\u00a0There is also a tourist office\u00a0downtown<\/a>.<\/p>\n
