Troms\u00f8\u00a0is the gateway to the Arctic. It is the major town in Arctic Norway, a communication hub, an administrative centre, and historically also the point of departure for Polar expeditions, sealing and whaling vessels en route to the seasonal hunting grounds, and for hunters and trappers embarking on an isolated winter in the Spitzbergen archipelago.Today, Troms\u00f8 is a thriving modern town of over 70,000 inhabitants, supplemented by about 9,000 students.<\/p>\n
We invite you to check the following websites for things to do during your stay: the\u00a0Arctic Philharmonic<\/a>; the\u00a0Northern Norway Art Museum<\/a>;\u00a0Troms\u00f8 University Museum<\/a>\u00a0(next door to the conference venue); the\u00a0Polar Museum<\/a>; the\u00a0Kulturhuset<\/a>;\u00a0H\u00e5logaland Teater<\/a>;\u00a0Perspektivet Museum;<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0more<\/a>.<\/p>\n If you want to explore the surrounding countryside, e.g. go on a Northern lights tour or a whale-watching trip,\u00a0Visit Troms\u00f8<\/a>\u00a0has a number of links for you to explore.<\/p>\n If the weather is cold, there is often also a clear sky and once night falls there should be good chances of seeing the\u00a0Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis<\/a>. There is also a service providing a\u00a0forecast of Northern Lights<\/a>\u00a0activity.<\/p>\n In early April you should plan for cold weather, but follow the\u00a0weather forecast<\/a>\u00a0service.\u00a0 The current weather can be followed from a\u00a0weather station<\/a>\u00a0(on the main university campus) with a live web camera facing south.<\/p>\n Whatever the weather, we can promise you that it won\u2019t be warm, so you will need warm clothing and solid shoes.<\/p>\n April weather in Troms\u00f8 is hard to predict, but there will likely be snow. Take sturdy shoes or boots that can handle some 10 cms of freshly fallen snow (Troms\u00f8 council is geared up for clearing snow, but not continuously) and icy pavements. It is worth noting that the pavements in the city centre are heated and are thus not icy; around the conservatoire, however, this is not the case.
