Hammarstr\u00f6m<br \/>\n<\/u><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Sustainable Energy &amp; Fuels\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">(2020)<i>\u00a0accepted 11\/5 2020<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Abstract<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The electrochemical behavior of [Co(<i>bapbpy<\/i>)Cl]<sup>+<\/sup>\u00a0[<b>1-Cl<\/b>]<sup>+<\/sup>, a pentacoordinated polypyridyl cobalt(II) complex containing a redox-active pseudo-macrocyclic ligand (<i>bapbpy<\/i>: 6,6\u2019-bis-(2-aminopyridyl)-2,2\u2019-bipyridine) has been investigated in DMF. Cyclic voltammograms (CV), recorded in the presence of increasing amounts of chloride anions, highlighted the existence of an equilibrium with the neutral hexacoordinated complex. Under a CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0atmosphere, CVs of [Co(<i>bapbpy<\/i>)Cl]<sup>+<\/sup>\u00a0exhibit significant current enhancement assigned to CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0catalytic reduction. Controlled-potential electrolysis experiments confirmed formation of CO and HCOOH as the only identifiable products. The addition of water or chloride ions was shown to affect the distribution of the products obtained, as well as the faradaic efficiency associated with their electrocatalytic generation. A combination of electrochemical techniques, chemical reductions, spectroscopic measurements (UV-Vis and IR) and quantum chemical calculations suggests that the ability of the\u00a0<i>bapbpy<\/i>\u00a0ligand to be reduced at moderately negative potentials drastically limits the catalytic performances of [<b>1-Cl<\/b>]<sup>+<\/sup>, by stabilizing the formation of a catalytically-competent CO<sub>2<\/sub>-adduct that only slowly reacts with oxide acceptors to evolve towards the desired reduction products.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to the Leif Hammarstr\u00f6m research group at Uppsala University on their ercently accepted manuscript!
