Attendance at FLAIR 2022

Field Laser Applications in Industry and Research 2022 was held in Aix-les-Bains, France, from the 12th to the 16th of September. It was organized and chaired by Francesco D’Amato and Erik Kerstel. The conference had keynote speakers such as Marlan O. Scully, Ursula Keller, John E. Kitching, and Tobias Kippenberg and featured many interesting presentations and posters featuring different spectroscopy methods and applications.

Our group was represented by two contributions targetting on-chip detection of carbon dioxide and methane.

CO2 isotope detection in the MIR with free-standing thin-film SiNx waveguides

Jehona Salaj, Marek Vlk, Henock D. Yallew, Jens Høvik, Astrid Aksnes, Jana Jágerská

In this work ,we presented a SiNx photonic crystal waveguide with a high confinement factor in air capable of detecting the two most abundant isotopes of carbon dioxide, 626 and 636. We presented a limit of detection of 30 ppb and a 13CO2/12CO2 isotope ratio measured with a precision of 0.33. This is the first isotope measurement using on-chip spectroscopy.

Methane absorption sensing at 3µm using silicon-on-insulator (SOI) slot waveguide

Henock Demessie Yallew, Marek Vlk, Anurup Datta, Sebastián Alberti, Jens Høvik, Astrid Aksnes, Martin Møller Greve, Jana Jágerská

Here we presented an SOI slot waveguide for methane detection with a confinement factor Γ=69% and a 1 ppm limit of detection (lower than the atmospheric concentration). This design features an optimized cross-sectional design and a novel coupling scheme for suppressing etalons.
