Our goal was to evaluate critical components of a viable product ecosystem\u2014from photonic integration and packaging to fluidics and early market assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-a0bebe47 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p><strong>Key Results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Direct laser\u2013chip coupling is feasible and robust<br>We demonstrated that direct butt-coupling of the laser to the photonic chip performs on par with free-space coupling. Both approaches deliver sufficient optical power, and the laser\u2019s frequency-tuning characteristics remain intact. This success is enabled by the excellent mode-size matching and the strong suppression of facet reflections achievable with our thin-film suspended waveguides.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integration with microfluidics is progressing<br>At UiT, we are assembling a custom glass microfluidic cell with a sample volume below 10 ml, designed for seamless integration with the sensor chip. Laser\u2013chip assembly efforts will continue in collaboration with Juha Toivonen\u2019s group at the University of Tampere.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong application potential across multiple sectors\u00a0<br>Our market analysis indicates broad commercial relevance for compact, high-performance gas sensors. Promising areas include biotechnology, environmental monitoring networks, industrial process control (e.g., waste management), and agricultural emissions tracking.
