She is a writer and ecocritical cultural studies scholar who works on American literature, film, and digital media. Alexa\u2019s scholarly research explores contemporary environmental culture from a cognitive\u00a0perspective with a focus on affect and emotion. After working for several years in the German film and television industry, she earned her PhD in Literature at the University of California, San Diego in 2008. She established and curated the\u00a0Green Visions Documentary Film Series\u00a0at the RCC from 2011-2014, which screens environmental documentaries from across the world that focus on a theme for that academic semester, followed by discussions with directors, environmental experts, and film scholars.<\/p>\n<p>Alexa is currently the principal investigator on the research project\u00a0\u201cNarrative Encounters with Ethnic American Literatures\u201d\u00a0(2018-2021), which is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The central aim of the project is to develop a cognitive approach that helps us to investigate the role of empathy and emotion in the literary mediation of ethnic and cultural difference. In collaboration with other academic scholars, she is also developing a new interdisciplinary research field in the environmental humanities,\u00a0Empirical Ecocriticism. She is a member of the Executive Board of the\u00a0European Association for the Study of Literature, Culture, and Environment (EASLCE)\u00a0and a member of the editorial boards of the\u00a0<em>Journal of Environmental Media<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Media+Environment<\/em>. Her academic publications include <em>Cosmopolitan Minds: Literature, Emotion, and the Transnational Imagination <\/em>(University of Texas Press, 2014) and <em>Affective Ecologies: Empathy, Emotion and Environmental Narrative <\/em>(Ohio State University Press, 2017).
