About the venue

SATIS 2018 will be held at the unique Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, situated on a small archipelago outside Tromsø, Norway.

From mid-May until mid-July, the Midnight Sun never sets. The constant light can be a nuisance to insomniac tourists, but the feeling of full sun on a white, sandy beach with azure waters at Midnight is unforgettable.

Then, on the other end of the spectrum, the sun does not rise between mid-November and mid-January. Inhabitants are not left in total darkness, but enjoy the Aurora Borealis and hordes of visiting whales and fish.

“Sommarøy” translates to “Summer island”, likely named so by reindeer herders taking their herds down from the mountains and out on the Archipelago to graze during summer. There are fewer reindeer today, but visitors are more or less guaranteed to see some.

Getting there

Sommarøy is served by Tromsø airport (TOS) with daily flights to Oslo and Stockholm (Sweden), and weekly to London Gatwick and Copenhagen airports.

SATIS will arrange local transportation from Tromsø to Sommarøy.
