Goahti

This round building is a traditional Sami type of house, as used by of the Sami people around Tromsø. The construction principle of a goahti is also found in some Sami tents.

The supporting structure of the goahti consists of four curved poles (bealljit), connected into two crescents with a beam between them. The crescents are so strong that they can support the straight wall-poles shown in the photo. The structure is covered with birch bark then peat to provide a durable, water-tight and heat-keeping construction.
