{"id":1058,"date":"2015-06-16T12:08:15","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T10:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/spaceweather\/?p=1058"},"modified":"2015-06-16T12:08:15","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T10:08:15","slug":"nasa-sw-redi-bootcamp-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/spaceweather\/2015\/06\/16\/nasa-sw-redi-bootcamp-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA SW REDI Bootcamp 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 3rd Space Weather Research, Education and Development Initiative (<a href=\"http:\/\/ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/support\/SWREDI\/\/swredi.php\">SW REDI<\/a>) has been held at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/goddard\/home\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center<\/a> from 2 June to 12 June 2015.<\/p>\n<p>SW REDI is a NASA educational project which aims to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Promote space environment awareness as an important component of the new millennium core education.<\/li>\n<li>Facilitate establishment of space weather programs at universities worldwide.<\/li>\n<li>Provide undergraduate student internship opportunities at CCMC\/SWRC to develop skills beneficial for any future career pursuit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program is ideal for motivated undergraduate or graduate students who seek to become independent space weather forecasters, or to perform space weather related research.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1062\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1062 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/site.uit.no\/spaceweather\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/194\/2015\/06\/Bootcamp15-1024x402.jpg\" alt=\"SW REDI Bootcamp 2015 participants. [Credits: NASA]<\/figcaption><\/figure>Training features the Integrated Space Weather Analysis System (<a href=\"http:\/\/iswa.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\">iSWA<\/a>), the space environment <a href=\"http:\/\/ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/models\/\">models installed at the CCMC<\/a> and draws on the experience of the CCMC\/SWRC&#8217;s unique research-based <a href=\"http:\/\/swrc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\">space weather service\/forecasting team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As members of NOSWE, we got the opportunity to participate in this year SW REDI\u00a0bootcamp.<\/p>\n<p>The first week was focused on the theoretical foundations of space weather: the Sun&#8217;s structure and its activity, flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), solar energetic particles and their impact on spacecraft and Earth&#8217;s magnetosphere. In addition,\u00a0participants were introduced\u00a0to iSWA and to the Database Of Notification, Knowledge, Information (<a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/DONKI\/\">DONKI<\/a>) web applications. These are extremely useful tools both for students and researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The second week was focused on forecast training. We had a deep, albeit short, look at the job of a space weather forecaster.<br \/>\nThe main activity of a forecaster is to monitor solar conditions, predict possible CMEs impacting Earth or spacecrafts and send notification alerts.<\/p>\n<p>iSWA is the main tool used to monitor solar activity. It is possible to get a comprehensive picture of the Sun looking at it in\u00a0different wavelengths thanks to instruments onboard of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_and_Heliospheric_Observatory\" target=\"_blank\">SOHO<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/STEREO\" target=\"_blank\">STEREO<\/a>\u00a0spacecrafts. iSWA can be also used to monitor the solar wind parameters (velocity, density and magnetic field), as measured by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Advanced_Composition_Explorer\" target=\"_blank\">ACE<\/a> spacecraft which orbits\u00a0the L1 libration point. This is possible by triangulation done via the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/analysis\/stereo\/\" target=\"_blank\">StereoCAT<\/a> web application. The parameters (speed, start time, time at 21.5 solar radius, half-width, latitude and longitude) are then input in the simulation, which is\u00a0based on the WSA-ENLIL Cone model. [Credits: NASA]<\/figcaption><\/figure>After the simulation, if any spacecraft (or Earth!) is supposed to be hit by the CME, the forecaster must send alert notifications to relevant customers.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the forecast training mentioned above,\u00a0participants had the\u00a0possibility to meet expert scientists and discuss with them several space weather\u00a0research topics.
