When challenged with a bacterial infection, the immune system is activated, and 
through this, the body fights infection. This results in inflammation. Inflammation is closely linked to coagulation, and activated coagulation has been thought to contribute to microvascular and organ failure in severe infections.

The Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) refers to chronic symptoms and signs following a blood clot in the deep veins. The Villalta scale measure the severity of PTS, which vary from none to disabling symptoms and signs like pain, swelling and ulcers. Post-trombotisk syndrom (PTS) er kroniske symptomer og tegn som følge av blodpropp i de dype venene. Alvorlighetsgraden av PTS måles med Villalta skår, og kan variere fra ingen plager eller tegn, til å være sterkt funksjonsnedsettende, for eksempel på grunn av kronisk smerte, hevelse og sår. Utvikling av behandling for PTS avhenger av forskning ettersom ingen effektiv kur er tilgjengelig.
