Unique control strategy for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the pig population

Norway established worldwide a unique control strategy for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the pig population, which includes population-wide annual surveillance in addition to contact tracing upon detection of MRSA in pig farms or farm workers. This ambitious study started in 2014 and has not been attempted elsewhere. A group of researchers from the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, in cooperation with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the Norwegian Reference Laboratory for MRSA at St. Olavs Hospital, Statens Serum Institut in Denmark and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, is continuously working in this issue.
