In addition to the research seminar on green energy transition, which took place on September 14, 2026, two days later, Prof Ivan Henrico from Stellenbosch University gave a lecture on “The Strait of Hormuz as a Global Chokepoint: Geopolitical Implications for African Economies, Energy Security, Trade and Foreign Policy.”
The lecture explored the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic chokepoint linking global energy security, trade and geopolitics, with particular attention to the implications for African economies and foreign policy.
Prof Henrico is Vice-Dean for Research and Internationalisation and Associate Professor in Military Geography at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Military Science. His interdisciplinary expertise spans geosciences, geoinformatics, military geography and geopolitics, complemented by more than a decade of experience as a geospatial scientist in the South African National Defence Force.
The event was organised by GLOBSEC in collaboration with UiT’s Centre for Geopolitics, Peace and Security (GPS) and was hosted and moderated by Bjarge Schwenke Fors, Researcher in Border Studies at GPS.
The lecture illustrates the broader value of the GLOBSEC partnership: bringing international scholars and perspectives to UiT while connecting the UiT–Stellenbosch network with research environments across the university. Through such activities, GLOBSEC provides a platform for international academic exchange and collaboration on contemporary security and geopolitical questions.
