This project offers Geoscience students on bachelor and master level internships at partner universities and associated businesses. For 2023 we will offer internships for Norwegian students, and from 2024 we will offer internships for international students internships in Norway as well. On this page we will post all the available internships.

Prosjektet «GeoInternInternational» er et prosjekt som skal utveksle studenter fra geovitenskapsutdanningene ved norske universiteter til arbeidspraksis ved partner-universiteter og -bedrifter i Panoramalandene (Canada, USA, Brasil, Sør-Afrika, India, Sør-Korea, Japan og Kina). 

Prosjektet har 3 praksisstillinger tilgjengelig for høsten 2025, og stillingene har en varighet på 8 uker. Stillingene er ved Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brasil.

Beskrivelse

Internship 1: Coal and Petroleum Source Rock Lab

The student will learn about the analytical procedures and techniques comprising fundamental steps in organic geochemistry like sample preparation and storage, aspects of sample treatment like extraction and fractionation procedures, and finally, the specific methods used for organic analyses as biomarker analysis by GC/MS, Rock-Eval Pyrolysis, and organic petrography (vitrinite reflectance and macerals).

Project at hand: Correlation between optical, molecular and structural parameters to determine the maturation degree of dispersed organic matter from sedimentary rocks.

Internship 2: Isotopic Geology Laboratory

We are pleased to offer internship opportunities in our state-of-the-art isotopic laboratory dedicated to geological research. This internship provides hands-on experience in processing geological samples to obtain isotopic data for Sm-Nd, Pb-Pb, and Sr isotopes in silicate rocks or carbonates and C and O isotopes in carbonate samples. Students will develop practical skills in advanced mass spectrometry techniques, including TIMS (Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry) and ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry), along with analytical proficiency in MEV-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy). Current projects under my supervision include isotopic and provenance studies applied to both oil & gas exploration and metallogeny, offering students the opportunity to contribute to research that bridges fundamental science and applied geological challenges. Additionally, interns will have the chance to collaborate and interact with other students under my supervision, fostering a collaborative learning environment and the exchange of ideas. This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring geoscientists to gain valuable experience and be part of impactful research initiatives.

Project at hand: Magmatic-hydrothermal mineralizing systems in the Borborema Province and the Dom Feliciano Belt: geodynamic and metallogenic studies.

Internship 3: Syntectonic Magmatism Research Group

The group is formed by MSc and PhD students, as well as undergrad students who want to initiate a scientific career. The research is done both in the field and laboratory. Fieldwork is intended to train students in describing, sampling and sketching igneous and metamorphic rocks and structures. Additionally, students who choose to participate in geophysical techniques, like AMS (Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility) and Paleomagnetism, have specific training in sampling rocks for this type of study by drilling and preparing drill cores for magnetic measurements. During the Brazilian summer (December to March), fieldwork is only possible in southernmost Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul state). From April to November there are periods of fieldwork also in the Santa Catarina state. The students may join ongoing research projects, mostly carried out in granitic rocks and their metamorphic host.

Project at hand: Sampling migmatitic gneisses for detailed study of geochemistry and petrochronology in the region of Camboriú, south Brazil.

Internship period : From September 3 to October 29, 2025 (Includes about 10 days of field work in late September)

Seoul, South Korea

This internship is offered at the IBS Center for Climate Physics under the mentorship of Prof. Axel Timmermann and Dr. Jasper Wassenburg. This internship offers hands-on experience in state-of-the-art analytical techniques for paleoclimate reconstructions focusing on speleothem samples from South Africa.

The student will familiarize themself with a series of advanced analytical methods including fluid inclusion water isotopes, trace element analysis by laser ablation mass spectrometry and aragonite/calcite by Raman spectroscopy.

Part of the internship is to learn to prepare samples for analysis, conduct precise analytical protocol, perform quality control on the results and collaborate with supervisors to interpret the data.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Geosciences
  • Experience in speleothem research and in paleoclimate reconstructions
  • Prior experience in labwork
  • Familiarity with at least one of the methods

Beskrivelse:

The internship opportunity is offered by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, to gain experience in U/Pb isotopic microanalysis using a state-of-the-art CAMECA-1280 ion-probe (secondary ion mass spectrometry, also known as SIMS). The project is part of an ongoing collaboration between UiT The Arctic University of Norway and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Jing Sun and Professor Chuanzhou Liu in Beijing.

Part of the internship is to learn how to identify and isolate minerals suitable as U/Pb chronometers (e.g., zircon, apatite, perovskite), and to assist with the U/Pb age determinations by the SIMS technique. The collected age data will be interpreted in light of continental lithosphere evolution, with focus on rifting and metallogenic events that may have affected the Fennoscandian Shield.

Internship at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan: 2024-Q1 

This internship opportunity is offered by the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Tokyo Tech, to gain experience in geochemical analyses of platinum-group elements and rhenium-osmium isotopes in ultramafic rocks. Peridotite samples are provided by UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and the successful candidate will work closely with Professor Akira Ishikawa and his group to determine Re-Os isochron ages and platinum-group element abundances using modern mass spectrometry techniques (Triton-plus TIMS and iCAP triple-quadrupole ICP-MS). Part of the internship programme is to learn how to use the collected data and interpret them in light of lithosphere-scale rifting events between Greenland and Eurasia.

  • 1) Sedimentology, Durkin Lab

Durkin is the lead investigator for the Rivers to Rocks (R2R) research lab that tackles projects in the field of clastic sedimentology spanning from: (i) the “badlands” of Dinosaur Provincial Park, where they study the evolution of Late Cretaceous rivers and environmental context of dinosaur discoveries; to (ii) the sedimentological impact of extreme flooding on the Assiniboine River in southwestern Manitoba; and (iii) paleoenvironmental reconstructions of hominin habitats in rift-basin sediments of the archeologically significant Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. The R2R lab that integrates a classic field-based approach with innovative technology and analytical methods, including the use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). Students working in the R2R lab gain experience in sedimentological field work, remote sensing methods, laboratory analysis, and scientific report preparation.

2) Paleoenvironmental Sedimentology, BETY Lab (Silva)

In the BETY Lab, our research focuses on the physical, geochemical, and biological mechanisms controlling the production and preservation of organic matter at geological time scales and the impact of organic productivity on global elemental cycles and planetary-scale climatic and biological crises. I am looking for students eager to tackle big research questions and interested in understanding how our oceans control environmental change at various time scales. On the other hand, you will learn and develop new skills relating to laboratory work and data analysis and be part of a broad research group focusing on sedimentology and paleontology.

3) Economic Geology, Brueckner Lab

The Brueckner Lab Research Group focuses on the impact of metamorphism and deformation on hydrothermal mineral deposits. We use both fieldwork and several analytical methods including reflected light microscopy, scanned electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction, electron probe micro-analyses and LA-ICP-MS to study the texture, mineral assemblage and chemistry in deformed mineral deposits. Additionally, software packages (ioGAS, Leapfrog) are used for 2D and 3D geochemical modelling of mineral deposits to constrain degree of remobilization on the deposit scale. My group works on volcanogenic massive sulfide, orogenic and epithermal deposits. Students working within my research group gain practical experience in core logging, data collection and interpretation and laboratory analyses that will be valuable tools in industry, academia and government.
