Analytical services

SIL is performing analyses within the field of Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) of stable isotopes of the elements C, N, S, O, H.

Hardware & Analyses

The laboratory is equipped with a Thermo-Fisher MAT253 IRMS with a Gasbench II for the determination of δ13C and δ18O of carbonates, δ13C of DIC and δ18O and δD of water. In addition, we have a Flash HT Plus Elemental Analyser for measurements of the isotopic ratios as well as the elemental compositions of C, N, S, O, H. The samples can be solids or liquids, consisting of organic or inorganic material.

The staff at SIL have access to sample preparation facilities, including a wet lab for sample washing and acid digestion, a clean-room for specific chemical cleaning, and a variety of optical and scanning electron microscopes.

Data

The data produced by the mass spectrometer is stored at the data centre at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway.

Users

SIL is available for the Norwegian and International scientific community with instruments, expertise and service within isotopic analyses for environmental, energy and carbon cycle applications. The new laboratory is also available for project collaborations.
