Our very own Marit Westergaard has been awarded the UiT Research and Development Prize for 2019 for her outstanding work in building up and strengthening the research community at the University of Tromsø.
This is what the committee says about Marit Westergaard and her work:
“Marit Westergaard is the leader of one of the flagship research communities at UiT, and she is also the former leader of CASTL (a Center of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway – RCN). She is currently leading a research project funded by The Research Council of Norway 2016-2020, as well as a project at the Center for Advanced Study in Oslo 2019-2020.
Overall Westergaard has made an invaluable effort to build up and strengthen the academic community at the University of Tromsø and to reinforce the university’s position as world-leading within linguistics. Her work has also contributed to the university having a world-leading research community in language acquisition and multilingualism. This makes her an especially worthy candidate for receiving the UiT Research and Development award 2019.”

– I am very happy to receive this award. It feels good to be acknowledged and appreciated by close fellow workers. I would like to thank the dean and our head of department for their support of our research over the last 4-5 years. We wouldn’t be where we’re at today without your support. And thank you to everyone in the research group for creating an inspiring and inclusive work environment, and for making it a joy to go to work every day, Westergaard said in her acceptance speech.
