Tromsø: Travel and Accommodation
Tromsø and UiT
Tromsø has a population of 73 480 (2016) and is situated at 69° north, which makes it the third most populous city north of the arctic circle. Despite its relatively small size, Tromsø has a thriving night life, and its bars, nightclubs, and restaurants have the capacity to cater 20 000 people. It also hosts numerous festivals and events (amongst others the Insomnia festival for electronic music the weekend after the workshop).
UiT – The Arctic University of Norway is the third largest university in Norway, and has its largest campus in Tromsø.
Travel
The main gateway to Tromsø is the Tromsø airport where SAS operates direct flights from Oslo and Stockholm. The airport is situated on Tromsø island, close to the city center. There are three ways to get from the airport to the city center:
- Taxi (approximately NOK 210)
- Airport express coaches (NOK 100)
- City busses, line 40 and 42 (NOK 50 in cash)
There are interactive screens on the airport with timetables for the coaches and busses.
The UiT campus lies a bit outside of the city center. One can travel by taxi (approximately NOK 200) or by city busses, line 20, 21 and 34 (50 NOK in cash).
Accommodation
There are several hotels in the city center. We will try to negotiate a special price with a hotel for our participants.
