Arctic SIZE is going dark for the next two weeks, venturing into the Arctic Ocean during the polar night to explore the ecological processes of the marine environment. Light is one of the main drivers for microbial growth. These tiny organisms comprise the base of all marine food webs and help shape the chemical composition of the ocean and our atmosphere. So what happens when the light goes away? How do organisms grow and how does this growth influence the behavior and life strategies of larger organisms? These are just some of the questions SIZE is aiming to answer. SIZE is joined by Swiss radio journalist and PhD Thomas Hausler, who will be detailing the day-to-day aboard R/V Helmer Hanssen.
