Field work on sea ice PART 2 starts: Billefjoden

The scooters are packed and we are ready to go as soon as the weather improves. With snowfall and low clouds travelling over glaciers becomes dangerous, so we decided to wait for better weather in the afternoon.

Today Tobias Vonnahme, Ulrike Dietrich, and Christine Dybwad will travel to Billefjorden on Svalbard for more field work. They will investigate the impacts of sea ice and different glacial systems on the ecosystem structure, the environmental conditions, and vertical particle fluxes. We will work closely with Josef Elster, Marie Sabacka and Eva Hejdukova from the Centre of Polar Ecology from the Czech Republic. They have a great knowledge of the are and microbiology on the terrestrial and glacial systems around Billefjorden. Together we will be able to understand the connections between land-glacier-and fjord.
